Chapter Nine
Caleb had run into the woods, hoping to stay hidden from the mean man. He tripped over a log, falling to his hands and knees. The stupid shoes the mean man had given him were too big. He wanted to cry, but he knew he needed to keep going. To stay hidden from the mean man.
He didnât know how to get home. His mommy always told him if he was lost to find a policeman. Or a mommy or daddy to get help. Not stranger danger, like the mean man. But a mommy or daddy with a kid.
But first he had to hide from the mean man.
He crawled behind a tree, rubbing his scraped knee. He sniffled, trying hard not to cry. He wanted his mommy really bad.
âCaleb, get back here right now!â
The mean manâs voice made him shrink farther behind the tree. No! He didnât want the mean man to find him! He needed to hide! Caleb looked behind him but didnât see the mean man. He decided to keep running. He was fast. The other kids at the day care told him so. He took off, trying not to trip over the stupid shoes as he went farther into the woods.
After stopping to catch his breath, he saw the playground. There werenât any other kids playing there that he could see, but he knew it would be the best place to find other mommies and daddies.
He peeked behind him one more time to make sure the mean man wasnât following, then ran again. Leaving the shade of the woods was hard, but he went straight to the jungle gym. There was a small area beneath the slide, so he crawled inside, squishing himself into the space to make himself as small as possible.
Caleb listened but didnât hear the mean man calling him anymore. He didnât think the mean man could see him. Caleb stayed hidden in the small space behind the slide, hoping the mean man would give up and go away.
He closed his eyes and waited for other mommies and daddies to come and help him.
